I presented a lightning talk at Major League Hacking (MLH) Hackcon 2024!
As someone who has been attending Hackcon since 2022, speaking at Hackcon 2024 was a particularly special milestone. A few months before the event, I submitted my speaker application, eager to share my experiences in building and nurturing campus tech communities. Being selected to speak on “How to Build a Campus Community” felt like a perfect way to give back to a community that has given me so much.
What is Hackcon? 🏕️
Bonus Short Clip! (duolingo bird is from a popup we went to before hackcon and is not affiliated with the event)
Hackcon is Major League Hacking’s flagship event that brings together over 300 hackathon organizers and campus tech leaders. Hosted at the scenic Camp Pontiac in Copake, New York, this unique conference combines professional development with the nostalgic atmosphere of summer camp. It’s where the next generation of tech leaders gather to share knowledge, form partnerships, and meet friends.
My Speaking Experience 💫
The Topic: Building Campus Communities
In my session, I shared insights from my various leadership roles:
Hackathon organizing experience (Enactus Hacks, Workshop Organizer at HackWestern, Google Developer Student Clubs Solution Challenge)
Leading the Google Developer Student Club, growing membership from 100 to 500+ members
Chairing the Women in Computer Science committee
These diverse experiences helped me provide a comprehensive view of community building across different contexts and audiences.
