GitHub Field Day Toronto 2022: A Community Leader's Experience
In October 2022, I had the privilege of attending GitHub Field Day Toronto, an unconference designed specifically for technical student community leaders. By a delightful coincidence, the event was held at Microsoft’s Canadian Headquarters.
What is GitHub Field Day?
GitHub Field Day is a unique gathering organized by Canadian GitHub Campus Experts 🇨🇦 and technical student leaders. It brings together student leaders from across Canada for a day of collaborative learning, networking, and community building.
The Day’s Journey
The day kicked off with engaging icebreakers, including a classic game of bingo that got everyone interacting. We then dove into various breakout sessions covering crucial topics for community organizers:
Open Source Contribution
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Event Organization
Community Building Strategies
Connecting with Fellow Community Leaders
One of the most valuable aspects of the event was meeting fellow computer science students who share a passion for community and leadership. Participants came from all across Ontario and even other provinces, bringing diverse perspectives and experiences to our discussions.
Key Takeaways
The event offered numerous insights, but what stood out most were:
Innovative approaches to encouraging student participation in open source
Creative event organizing strategies from different campuses
Inspiring initiatives being organized at other universities
Valuable internship advice and experiences shared by peers in software engineering roles
Community in Action
